Sometimes through necessity, sometimes by choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a fundamental question arises:&nbsp;<strong>Does the language in which psychotherapy takes place have an impact on its progress?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, is it better to have therapy in one's native language?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientific research, clinical observations and testimonials are now converging towards a nuanced but clear answer:&nbsp;<strong>Language is not a neutral tool in psychotherapy<\/strong>. It is at the very heart of the therapeutic process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article proposes to explore in depth why the mother tongue plays such a central role, what its psychological effects are, and in which cases another language can (or cannot) be relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Language: far more than just a means of communication<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In everyday life, we can get the impression that language is a functional tool: it is used to transmit information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in psychotherapy, especially in approaches rooted in speech, language fulfils much deeper functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One\u00a0<strong>Vector of emotions<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One\u00a0<strong>Memory support<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One\u00a0<strong>identity marker<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One\u00a0<strong>Cultural anchoring<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>one<strong>\u00a0expression of their subjectivity<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, speaking is never neutral. And even less so when it comes to talking about oneself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research in psychology and psycholinguistics shows that emotions are closely linked to the language in which they were experienced and learned. For example, autobiographical memories are often richer and more intense when recalled in the language in which they were encoded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mother tongue and access to emotions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A stronger emotional intensity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Several studies show that&nbsp;<strong>Emotions are felt more intensely in one's mother tongue.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bilinguals often report an emotional distance when expressing themselves in a foreign language. Don't hesitate to negotiate the language<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you feel that language is a barrier, it is perfectly acceptable to discuss this with your therapist. If they are multilingual, you can negotiate the language in which your therapy takes place, or switch between the two languages if that is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Viewing multilingualism as a resource<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Being able to navigate between multiple languages can enrich therapy, especially (but not exclusively!) if therapist and patient share the same languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La langue n\u2019est pas une simple\u00f3rio d\u00e9tail technique en psychoth\u00e9rapie. It's profoundly human:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What language are you most comfortable expressing yourself in regarding things you want to talk about in therapy?
