In the media, in conversations, on social media... <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, behind this familiar term, much ambiguity, fantasy, and sometimes even mistrust still remain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it simply \u201ctalking about one's problems\u201d? Is it only for people in great distress? How does it actually work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, I propose to explore in depth what psychotherapy is, its objectives, its mechanisms, and what concretely plays out within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A simple definition of psychotherapy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychotherapy is <strong>Psychological support process aimed at relieving suffering, better understanding one's internal workings, and fostering personal change<\/strong>, or perhaps all of it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It rests on <strong>regular exchanges<\/strong> between a person (often called the patient or client depending on the approach \u2013 the person seeking help) and a trained professional (psychologist, psychiatrist, or psychotherapist). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But reducing psychotherapy to a mere conversation would be very incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is <strong>a structured framework, with objectives, methods, and a clear intention: to enable transformation<\/strong>, whether emotional, behavioural, and\/or relational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pourquoi-entamer-une-psychotherapie-cat-moir-wolfe-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pourquoi-entamer-une-psychotherapie-cat-moir-wolfe-2.jpg 360w, https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pourquoi-entamer-une-psychotherapie-cat-moir-wolfe-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pourquoi-entamer-une-psychotherapie-cat-moir-wolfe-2-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Why start psychotherapy?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We begin psychotherapy for a variety of reasons. Contrary to popular belief, it\u2019s not necessary to be \u201cvery unwell\u201d to seek help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some common patterns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>feeling anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Going through a difficult period (bereavement, separation, burnout)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>suffering from depression or emotional disorders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dating difficulties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>repeating unsatisfying life patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to seek to know oneself better<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychotherapy can also be a process of personal development, without necessarily there being an identified \u201cproblem\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One might simply want to explore their inner world (their desires, anxieties, dreams, etc.) in a confidential setting where they can express themselves freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" style=\"color:#304b43;background-color:#f5d757\"><strong>To book an appointment<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>The different forms of psychotherapy<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There isn't just one form of psychotherapy, but a multitude of approaches, each with its own way of understanding and supporting human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Psychoanalytic approaches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by psychoanalysis, these therapies explore the unconscious, past and present experiences, and internal conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to understand the deep-rooted causes of current difficulties, which are often linked to personal history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. <strong>Cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT)<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>CBT focuses on current thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They aim to identify problematic patterns and to modify them using expression and practical exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. <strong>Humanistic therapies<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These approaches emphasise lived experience, authenticity and the individual's potential for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The therapist adopts an empathetic posture, fostering a climate of trust<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. systemic therapies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>They consider that individual difficulties are part of a system (family, professional, social).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We then work on interactions and relationships rather than on the individual alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"translation-block\">How I work<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these forms of psychotherapy have certain things in common, the most important of which are&nbsp;<strong>A benevolent and non-judgemental posture from the therapist<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>The importance of a good therapist-patient\/client alliance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I primarily work from a psychoanalytic orientation, but I also draw inspiration from elements of humanistic and systemic therapies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cabinet-psychologue-cat-moir-wolfe.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cabinet-psychologue-cat-moir-wolfe.jpg 360w, https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cabinet-psychologue-cat-moir-wolfe-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/catmoirwolfe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/cabinet-psychologue-cat-moir-wolfe-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>How does psychotherapy work?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though each approach has its specificities, some steps are common to most therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The first meeting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first session is often a time for exploration. It allows for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to express their request<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to ask questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to discover the way the therapist works<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It's also a key moment to gauge whether there's chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Defining objectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the circumstances, the objectives can be very specific (reducing an anxiety attack) or more open-ended (better self-understanding).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They can evolve over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Therapeutic work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the heart of psychotherapy. It can take different forms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>speak freely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>analysing lived experiences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>do exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explore one's emotions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>revisit memories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This work is done progressively, session by session, and depending on the therapist's approach and the issues and objectives of the person consulting, the work can incorporate several of these elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. The end of the therapy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychotherapy can last a few weeks, several months, or even years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end can be decided when the objectives have been met or the person feels sufficiently autonomous. This relationship can also reveal relational patterns that are replayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The realisation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding its workings (emotions, thoughts, behaviours) is often a key step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These realisations allow us to break free from certain automatic behaviours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Experimentation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the safety of the office, one can test new ways of thinking or acting in one's imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This allows us to anchor the change in reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regularity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychological change takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regular sessions create a rhythm that supports the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What psychotherapy is not<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To better understand what psychotherapy is, it is useful to clarify what it is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This isn't a quick fix or a magic bullet \u2013 as our undesirable symptoms took time to appear, it stands to reason they'll take time to undo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It isn't a friendly relationship \u2013 there's an asymmetry in the therapist-patient relationship, meaning your therapist knows more about you than you know about them. This is perfectly normal, as the therapeutic relationship isn't an ordinary social one.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This isn't a judgement or a moral evaluation \u2013 your therapist isn't there to police your thoughts or tell you how to live your life, but to offer you a space in which you can explore your own desires and find your own solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is not a passive process \u2013 the person consulting remains an active participant in their journey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Common misconceptions about psychotherapy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cIt's for weak people\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Au contraire, starting psychotherapy requires courage. It involves confronting yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cIt lasts a lifetime\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some therapies are long, others brief. It is a structured, profound, and transformative process that allows us to explore our inner world, understand our mechanisms, and evolve our way of being in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It rests on both methods, a human relationship and personal commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To commit to it is to accept taking time for oneself, questioning one's habits, and sometimes going through uncomfortable patches.
