And how do you choose a therapist?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a society where mental health is finally getting the attention it deserves, more and more people are considering consulting a professional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, one question often comes up: what exactly is a psychologist? And above all, how do I choose the right therapist for me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a simple guide to better understand and make an informed choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a psychologist?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A psychologist is a mental health professional trained at university (in France, up to Master 2 level) in psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Contrary to popular belief, he is not a doctor. This means he does not prescribe medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Their role is to listen, support and help to understand psychological or emotional difficulties. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may concern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>stress and anxiety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mood disorders (such as depression)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relationship difficulties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>traumas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transition periods (bereavement, separation, career change, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The psychologist uses different approaches (psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioural, humanistic therapies, etc.) depending on their training and sensitivity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All approaches have their place, and can be interesting and effective depending on the subject, their desire and their problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist: what are the differences?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It's easy to get lost among the different \u201cpsych\u201d professionals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The psychiatrist<\/strong>&nbsp;is a doctor specialising in mental health. They can make medical diagnoses and prescribe medication. Whether working in an institution or in private practice, they must be registered with the Regional Health Agency and possess an RPPS\/ADELI number to practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The psychologist<\/strong>&nbsp;proposes therapeutic work based on listening and psychological tools. The title of psychologist is regulated. The psychologist must also be registered with the ARS and possess a RPPS\/ADELI number to practice, whether working in an institution or in private practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The psychotherapist<\/strong>&nbsp;is also a regulated title, accessible under certain conditions (often with training in psychology or psychiatry). In general, a psychotherapist is a psychologist or a doctor specialising in one or more forms of psychotherapy. Just like psychiatrists and psychologists, psychotherapists must have an RPPS or ADELI number and be registered with the ARS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The psychoanalyst<\/strong> is a professional trained in the practice of\u00a0<strong>psychoanalysis<\/strong>, a method that aims to explore the unconscious elements that can influence our behaviours and feelings. Although the title of psychoanalyst is not regulated by the State, in order to be able to present oneself as such, rigorous training must be undertaken, comprising several years of intensive personal psychoanalysis, and one must be registered with an accredited body such as the Paris Psychoanalytic Society.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All these professionals can be complementary depending on the needs, and some hold multiple titles, working as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, for example, or a psychologist and psychotherapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Psychopractitioner<\/strong> is a <strong>unregulated title<\/strong> which applies to various practices in the field of human well-being. Although some psychopractitioners may offer helpful support, it is important to remember that these professions are not regulated; thus, practically anyone can set themselves up as a psychopractitioner without needing specific degrees or qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to choose a therapist?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing a therapist is primarily about choosing a person with whom you feel comfortable. Here are some important criteria to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. The feeling, above all<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The bond of trust is essential. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychiatry\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2021.613627\/full\">Studies show that, regardless of the therapist's theoretical approach, the alliance between the therapist and the client is the most important factor in the effectiveness of psychotherapy.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the first sessions, ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do I feel heard?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>May I speak freely?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I feel judged?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the answer is no, I strongly encourage you, in the first instance, to discuss it with your therapist. It's entirely possible that what is happening between you is worth exploring. Of course, you should only talk about it if you feel safe to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the very least, the psychologist will know how you're feeling and why you've decided not to continue therapy with them; at best, expressing your doubts might even mark the beginning of a constructive discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you feel there's no chemistry between you, don't hesitate to look elsewhere.<strong> It's important to feel comfortable with your psychologist.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. The therapeutic approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each therapist has their own method. <strong>Some are more concrete and solution-oriented, others more introspective.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, it's often said that cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT) are structured and present-focused while psychoanalytic approaches explore the past more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no \u201cbest\u201d approach, only the one that helps you live more serenely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My own practice is informed by psychoanalysis. However, contrary to popular belief, in psychoanalytically oriented therapy, you don't spend all your time talking about your childhood!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, the conversation naturally moves from the past to the present and to the future as we explore what you bring to the sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Practical aspects<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Several factors can also influence your choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The cost of sessions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find a psychologist you think you can work with, but their fees are too high for you, don't hesitate to discuss it with them, as it may be possible to find an arrangement that suits both parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The location or the possibility of teleconsultation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many reasons why attending a psychologist's practice can be difficult, whether due to physical mobility issues, geographical distance, or organisational challenges. I offer both online and in-person consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Availability<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Between work and family obligations, or when our schedules are atypical for one reason or another, it's not always easy to find the time to see a psychologist. Some psychologists offer appointments early in the morning, in the evening, or at weekends for those of us who cannot attend a consultation during usual working hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The spoken language<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1367006920902522\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1367006920902522\">Studies show that healthcare services, including mental health services, are more effective when accessed in a language one is proficient in. <\/a>I offer consultations in French, English and German, according to your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These aspects matter for long-term commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommendations (with caution)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Advice from friends or online can be useful, but keep in mind that <strong>Every experience is personal<\/strong>. A great therapist for one person won't necessarily be the right fit for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, if a therapist shares patient testimonials online, it's important to consider whether consent was obtained and\/or if these testimonials have been anonymised...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can you choose the wrong therapist?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, and that's normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding the right professional can take time. It's part of the process. The important thing is not to give up if an initial experience isn't conclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing a psychologist is a personal and brave step. M\u00eame si certains psychopraticiens peuvent proposer un accompagnement utile, il est important de garder \u00e0 l'esprit que ces professions ne sont pas r\u00e9glement\u00e9es ; ainsi, pratiquement n'importe qui peut s'installer en psychopraticien sans avoir besoin de dipl\u00f4mes ou de qualifications sp\u00e9cifiques.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Comment choisir son psy ?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Choisir un psy, c\u2019est avant tout choisir une personne avec qui vous vous sentez \u00e0 l\u2019aise. Voici quelques crit\u00e8res importants \u00e0 prendre en compte.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Le feeling avant tout<\/strong><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Le lien de confiance est essentiel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychiatry\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2021.613627\/full\">Des \u00e9tudes montrent que, quelle que soit l\u2019approche th\u00e9orique du psy, l\u2019alliance entre le psy et la personne consultante est le facteur le plus important dans l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 de la psychoth\u00e9rapie.<\/a><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>D\u00e8s les premi\u00e8res s\u00e9ances, demandez-vous :<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Est-ce que je me sens \u00e9cout\u00e9(e) ?<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Est-ce que je peux parler librement ?<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Est-ce que je me sens jug\u00e9(e) ?<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Si la r\u00e9ponse est non, je vous encourage vivement dans un premier temps d\u2019en parler \u00e0 votre psy. C\u2019est tout \u00e0 fait possible que ce qui se passe entre vous m\u00e9rite d\u2019\u00eatre explor\u00e9. Bien s\u00fbr, vous ne devriez en parler que si vous vous sentez en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 pour le faire.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u00c0 tout le moins, le psychologue saura ce que vous ressentez et pourquoi vous avez d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de ne pas poursuivre la th\u00e9rapie avec lui ; au mieux, le fait d'exprimer vos doutes pourrait m\u00eame marquer le d\u00e9but d'une discussion constructive.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Si toutefois vous estimez que le courant ne passe pas entre vous, n'h\u00e9sitez pas \u00e0 chercher ailleurs.<strong> Il est important de se sentir \u00e0 l'aise avec son psychologue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. L\u2019approche th\u00e9rapeutique<\/strong><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Chaque psy a sa m\u00e9thode. <strong>Certaines sont plus concr\u00e8tes et orient\u00e9es solutions, d\u2019autres plus introspectives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Par exemple, on dit souvent que les th\u00e9rapies cognitivo-comportementales (TCC) sont structur\u00e9es et ax\u00e9es sur le pr\u00e9sent pendant que les approches psychanalytiques explorent davantage le pass\u00e9.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Il n\u2019y a pas de \u201cmeilleure\u201d approche, seulement celle qui vous aide \u00e0 vivre plus sereinement.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Ma propre pratique est orient\u00e9e par la psychanalyse. Cependant, contrairement \u00e0 ce que l'on croit souvent, dans une th\u00e9rapie d'orientation psychanalytique, on ne passe pas tout son temps \u00e0 parler de son enfance !<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, la conversation passe naturellement du pass\u00e9 au pr\u00e9sent et au futur \u00e0 mesure que nous explorons ce que vous apportez aux s\u00e9ances.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.
